2026 Bob Wiseman Scholarship period is OPEN!

Background & Purpose

PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Our mission is to create a caring, just, and affirming world for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.

 

The scholarship program is designed to:

  1. Recognize outstanding LGBTQ+ and ally students whose personal qualities and actions are consistent with PFLAG’s mission and to
  2. Encourage and support LGBTQ+ and ally students in furthering their educational goals and careers.

Eligibility  (You must meet all criteria to be eligible)

  • You self-identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer, non-binary, other LGBTQ+, or straight ally.
  • You are on track to graduate by June 2026 from a recognized public/charter high school in Placer County.
  • You have applied, or intend to apply, to enter higher education (college, university, or a trade/technical school) by fall 2026.

High School Student Application Requirements (note: incomplete applications may not be considered).

  • Copy of complete (to date) high school transcript or equivalent document.
  • Two letters of recommendation
    • One must be from a high school teacher or staff member
    • The second must be from an unrelated adult friend or member of the community.
  • Both letters should attest to the applicant’s character, academic potential, and specific positive involvement related to justice and equality for the LGBTQ+ community. Letters must include the writer’s name, phone number, and how they know the applicant.
  • Essay – 250 words (minimum) to 500 words (maximum), typewritten. To include, but not limited to, applicant’s vocational/career goals, interests and hobbies, extra-curricular activities, and evidence of support for justice and equality for LGBTQ+ persons and community. Please also include either (1) how being an LGBTQ+ person has affected your life, or (2) how being an LGBTQ+ supporter and straight ally has affected your life.

Scholarship Awards

Five+ scholarships are available starting at $750. Applicants will receive official notification by April 10, 2026. Awards will be presented at PFLAG’s Chapter meeting in Roseville on Monday evening, June 8th, 2026, and at the high school’s Senior Awards events. Proof of acceptance and enrollment in a college, university, or trade/technical school will be required prior to the disbursement of funds.

Download, complete, and return the signed PFLAG 2026 Scholarship Application Form. Make sure any attachments are in the PDF format and then submit them by email to greaterplacerpflag@gmail.com OR by mail in an envelope postmarked no later than Monday, March 2, 2026 sent to PFLAG Greater Placer County, 2280 Grass Valley Hwy #293, Auburn, CA, 95603.
